Sunderrajan Krishnan Water Policy Research HIGHLIGHT Ten Things to Learn from the Dug Well Recharge Program
نویسنده
چکیده
Finance Minister of India, in 2007 Government of India launched the Dug Well Recharge Scheme as a national program with an outlay of Rs. 1800 crore. Its aim was to educate and incentivize farmers in 100 hard rock districts of the country to modify their open dug wells for groundwater recharge. However, after around 3 years of operation of the scheme, our review found that it failed to achieve much success in the country. Analysis of the scheme’s implementation provides us lessons that could be useful for any national groundwater program for the future.

Assessing the Agrarian Impact of Decentralized Water Harvesting at the Basin Scale
various water harvesting interventions. A direct consequence of increased groundwater recharge in an aquifer is a range of social and economic benefits accruing from it – through improved provisioning of drinking water, irrigation and other uses. One of the visible economic benefits is often through supplemental irrigation to crops and increase in cropping intensity. The question often arising ...

Possibly, a great health burden of the poor can be addressed in a preventive manner by just addressing these two pillars. When we look at diseases such as fluorosis, Arsenicosis, Diarrhea, Renal stones, they seem to relate to Anemia, Osteoporosis, infant mortality, some types of heart diseases and other concerns on which there is wider action in terms of public health. To be noted is that focus...
متن کاملMapping the Hydrological Processes in a Community-reconfigured River Basin Some Conceptual Issues and Results from a Simple Dry Run 50 2 0 1 2
This highlight presents some early results from an attempt to quantify the hydrological impact of AKRSP’s water harvesting work in the Meghal river basin. In the process, we discuss new ways of combining data from multiple sources to study the impact of decentralized water harvesting at the river basin scale. Faced with absence of good quality data from formal sources, we make a case for using ...
متن کاملMeasuring infiltration rate and hydraulic conductivity in a dry well in a thin overburden
IInfiltration rate and hydraulic conductivity are immensely important parameters for evaluating the hydrology of subsurface environments. Specifically, in disposal wells schemes and in artificial recharge plans both properties must be correctly assessed to better analyze the performance of these installations. In a new research, tanker water and rainfall runoff were injected into a 22.5 m deep ...
متن کاملGroundwater Development in Hard Rocks
Groundwater development in fractured hard rock aquifers has always assumed a secondary role compared with that in unconsolidated alluvial strata or in soluble carbonate rocks. This is because of the nonextensive, irregular, nonisotropic, and inhomogeneous nature of the aquifer and the relatively small yields of water available from dug-wells or drilled bores. However, many of the highly populat...
